LSU announced Monday that it will host a NCAA Tournament doubleheader at Louisiana State University and the University of Pittsburgh on April 10-12.
The Tigers will be playing at Louisiana Tech University, which was the site of LSU’s historic homecoming in 1982, when the Tigers defeated North Carolina in overtime to earn the program’s first national title.
The announcement was made in a press release from LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, who said the game will be the first in a series of NCAA Tournament contests that will take place in 2019.
The series will feature two of the top 10 teams in the nation, according to Allevac, with LSU holding a 3-0 edge in the overall standings.
It will also feature LSU’s two top-ranked teams in college basketball.
The first of those games will be on Jan. 9, 2019, when LSU visits the Pittsburgh Panthers at the Thomas & Mack Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The game will mark the first time since 1985 that the two schools will play a doubleheader.
The second of those matchups will take the form of a pair of matchups between the Tigers and the Panthers on March 3-6, 2019.
The Tigers will host Pitt in an exhibition game at the University Center in Richmond, Va.
The Panthers will play LSU at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
The conference tournament format is designed to give all 16 teams in each conference a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament, but will be subject to approval by the tournament committee.
The first round is scheduled for June 5-8, 2019 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the final will take an extra week.
The NCAA will select the top 32 teams in a six-team bracket for the tournament and a four-team round-robin for the championship game.
The tournament is scheduled to start March 16 in Miami.
