Posted November 07, 2019 11:20:32While many students at Duke University take out student loans to pay for college, it seems the university is looking to expand its reach beyond the university.
The university announced on Thursday that it has begun a new scholarship program for students who want to get their degrees at a different college.
The scholarship will allow students to take out the full cost of a four-year degree and then use the money to attend a community college or a post-secondary school.
“We’re really proud to announce that we are opening a new scholarships program to help people in their second or third year of college to help pay for their degrees,” said Duke University President Richard Anderson.
The university will now award $1,000 scholarships for students in the first two years of their degrees.
Students can apply for the scholarship in the fall or spring semester.
“Our scholarship program has helped more than 3,500 students since it was first introduced in 2016,” said Anderson.
Duke is a private university in Durham, North Carolina, and the university says the new scholarship is the first of its kind in the United States.
In 2017, the university opened a scholarship program that allowed students to attend community colleges, but not university schools.
The Duke scholarship program, which is designed to be a one-time scholarship, is a “first in the nation” program, said Anderson, who also chairs the board of trustees for the Duke Student Foundation.
The new scholarship will not cover tuition for a four year degree.
Duke says it will pay the full tuition and fees for students to earn their degrees and is offering a $1 million bonus for those who do so.
Drake University, which has more than 40,000 students, is also offering a similar scholarship program.
